About Alyssa Irene
Artist Statement
My self-concealment in my photographs underscores the discomfort and unease I feel within the world around me. Within industrial spaces, I reclaim territory in a man-made environment, a way of protecting myself while confronting the structures that overwhelm me. I center the zipper of my silver bodysuit as a small act of performance, highlighting how women’s clothing frequently prioritizes appearance over autonomy. Rather than being sexualized, I merge with the industrial forms and architecture around me. The restrictive nature of women’s fashion mirrors the broader lack of women’s agency in male-dominated spaces.
